Kolkata - The Crowning Glory of Bengal

The iconic Calcutta also called Kolkata in its Bengali pronunciation, is the capital city of the state of West Bengal in India. It reigns as one the biggest cities of the country and boasts of a whopping population of 19.5 million people, combining the old and the metropolitan city. It is considered the third most densely populated Indian metropolis. Flanked by the international border with Bangladesh (The Radcliffe Line) on one side, Kolkata sprawls down the east bank of the famous River Hooghly. The vastly spread city covers an area of 205 square kilometers.

The primary spoken language is Bengali while English and Hindi are the secondary. Bengali as a language is soft in comparison to other Indian dialects and is sweet to listen to. A state so diverse in itself, West Bengal speaks several dialects of the Bengali language through the various districts of the region. The weather is normally pleasant throughout the year with moderate rainfall during the season and a very mild winter. Fish and rice are the predominant diet of most of the locals apart from the infamous sweet curd, other Bengali delicacies, and “Chhenaa Mithai” (fermented, sugar syrup-soaked sweets). The city can be reached by flight, train, road, and by boat.

Kolkata hosts an astounding number of international as well as domestic tourists all year round, wherein the average of foreign travelers is 20.3 lakh annually. Its rich historical architecture, crafts, cuisine, and culture is what draws travelers to this vibrant city, while the ‘Durga Puja Season’ is the most eventful and highly celebrated time in the state.
